Ceramics laboratory
Atelier Mundubira is a ceramics laboratory founded in 2020 and operated by Lara Sanchez with the purpose to experiment and explore the possibilities of clay and glazing, creating ever changing hand built and thrown pieces from an explorer’s perspective.
Inspired by world explorers
Mundubira means 'around the world' in Euskera, the language of the first explorer who managed to circumnavigate the globe 500 years ago: Juan Sebastián Elkano. My journey into pottery is also a journey of exploration, discovery and learning.

The beauty of the handmade process
I design from instinct and from the shapes I’ve seen in my travels. Making objects of use is my focus at the moment, and using a handmade process in order to do this allows me to explore characteristics of product design that are unique to physical objects, which is very different to my normal job as digital product designer.
Handmade things are never exactly the same as each other, they all have their own uniqueness, and that’s what makes them so valuable and special.
Exploring handmade pottery
Most of my work is done on the pottery wheel, but I make some of my creations with handbuilding techniques. I like simplicity, I try to move away from ornaments and let the object shine from its most basic shapes.
Stoneware
Stoneware is a type of clay that is fired at a high temperature. It is very durable, making it ideal for objects of use (like mugs, vases, plates, etc.).
