Japan has a long tradition in the artesanal paper. There are several techniques to construct artesanal works with paper instead of brushes and paint. This has caused certain confusion as Hari-E means “tearing images”; Chigiri-E means “isolate images”; and Kiri-E means “cut images”. It seems there isn’t an exact word to describe this unique techniques or art.
“Collage” which from the French means “adhere to” generally are small pieces of paper adhered to a format and is the technique most commonly known to be confused with Harie-E. In the collage, it clearly suggests that the elements conserve an individual form and identity.
Harie is a Japanese art, traditional and unique, which consists in tearing and assembling the paper pieces in the art work to be done. The paper is hand made and painted by hand and is better known as washi paper. The Hari-E is done with subtle pieces of paper, placed graciously over a canvas, paper and paper board . The designs are based on textures based on traditional Japanese concepts such as the four seasons and annual events of the Japanese calendar, however, as time has gone by, occidental artists have open their designs and concepts introducing new themes and other cultures which reflect the evolution of the Hari-E.
